Joseph S. Cianfrani is a
partner in our Orange County office. Mr. Cianfrani represents various
clients in all types of intellectual-property disputes, including those
involving patents, trademarks, trade secrets, and copyrights. His
practice primarily involves patent cases at both the trial and appellate
levels. Mr. Cianfrani has served as counsel in numerous cases, many of
which have successfully gone to trial before a jury or bench, or have
been appealed. In 2004, Mr. Cianfrani served as a member of two trial
teams in obtaining $134.5 million and $43.5 million jury verdicts for
the firm’s medical device clients. In 2008, Mr. Cianfrani successfully
represented another of the firm’s clients in a jury trial, obtaining a
judgment of infringement, validity, and substantial damages. Mr.
Cianfrani also maintains a very active appellate practice and has
represented the firm’s clients on numerous appeals before the United
States Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit in cases involving
computer peripherals, optics, electronics, software, and medical
devices.
Mr. Cianfrani is also a member of several professional groups and has
previously served on the board of directors of the American
Intellectual Property Association. Mr. Cianfrani has also written and
spoken extensively on patent law and appellate practice before the Court
of Appeals for the Federal Circuit.
Before joining the firm in 1998, Mr. Cianfrani served as a law clerk
to the Honorable Arthur J. Gajarsa, Circuit Judge of the United States
Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit. Mr. Cianfrani became a
partner in 2003.
