David W. deBruin is a born trial attorney who has appeared in every state and federal court in Delaware. From complex tort litigation, to commercial litigation, commercial bankruptcy and intellectual property cases, David is a litigator who has a knack for connecting with people in the courtroom to get the best possible outcomes for his clients.
Known for his diligent preparation, persuasive courtroom presentations and business-focused solutions, David works primarily from the firm’s Greater Wilmington office and is licensed to practice in Delaware, Pennsylvania, and New Jersey. He has extensive knowledge of Delaware’s rules of civil procedure, courtroom procedures, best practices and esteemed judiciary, and he frequently acts as co-counsel or local counsel for some of the nation’s leading law firms. Delaware’s Superior Court previously appointed David as the first ever Plaintiffs’ Coordinating Counsel for asbestos litigation in the state.
David handles a full array of civil litigation cases. From product liability and catastrophic personal injury, to corporate litigation running the gamut from simple breach of contract cases to complex shareholder derivative lawsuits, as well as patent infringement. With significant experience in all aspects of bankruptcy law, David protects creditors’ interests in Chapter 11, Chapter 7 and Chapter 13 bankruptcy proceedings. He represents financial institutions, landlords, equipment lessors, purchasers of assets, judgment creditors, Chapter 7 trustees and Unsecured Creditors’ and Equity Committees.
Before joining Gawthrop Greenwood, PC, David was founder of The deBruin Firm in Wilmington. His complex litigation caseload included cases involving mesothelioma, toxic chemical exposure, pharmaceutical and medical devices, as well as patent infringement, business law, breach of contract and violation of non-compete clauses, medical practice separation and shareholder derivative litigation. He also handled creditors’ rights enforcement and committee work in the United States Bankruptcy Court District of Delaware.
From 2005-2013, David worked at the law firm then known as Bifferato, Gentilotti, Biden & Balick, where he worked his way up from senior associate to a Director and head of the Litigation Department. Prior to that time, he worked as an associate at three Philadelphia area law firms including Ciardi, Maschmeyer & Karalis.
A member the Delaware Bar Association, the Pennsylvania Bar Association and the New Jersey Bar Association, David is also an active member of the American Association for Justice, the Delaware Trial Lawyers Association, and the Richard S. Rodney Inn of Court. David has co-authored multiple amicus curiae briefs on behalf of the Delaware Trial Lawyers Association relating to cases of import for the citizens of Delaware. In addition, he was one of three editors as well as a columnist for The Journal of the Delaware State Bar Association from 2008 to 2017.
David played college football for the University of Maryland, where he was a three-year varsity letterman. A graduate with a Bachelor of Arts in Criminology and Criminal Justice, he worked for the Summit County Sheriff’s Office prior to earning his Juris Doctor at Widener University School of Law. He is the proud father of four children, and donates his time to Delaware Volunteer Legal Services, where he has represented victims of domestic abuse in protection from abuse (PFA) proceedings and trials since 2005.
