Richard J. Landau is the co-founding member (with Kristen M. Tsangaris) of RJ Landau Partners PLLC in Ann Arbor, Michigan. Mr. Landau has extensive experience in litigating high stakes cases in the consumer finance area, including class actions as well as multi-party fraud and insurance coverage litigation on behalf of lending institutions seeking the recovery of the proceeds of mortgage fraud from culpable parties. He has pursued such litigation against closing agents, title companies, mortgage brokers, appraisers, borrowers, third party transferees and other culpable parties. Mr. Landau has secured over $30 million in mortgage fraud recoveries on behalf of his lender clients. He is the co-author (with Kristen M. Tsangaris) of “The Mortgage Fraud Epidemic,” (2006 v.22 no.4, The Review of Banking and Financial Services).
Mr. Landau’s litigation experience runs the gamut of the litigation process, ranging from administrative hearings, through bench and jury trials. He is also an experienced advocate at the appellate level both in the federal and state courts. Mr. Landau has served as lead counsel in a number of notable appellate decisions including most recently Patterson v. Citifinancial Mortg. Corp., 288 Mich. App. 526; 794 N.W.2d 634 (2010). Mr. Landau received his Bachelor of Arts degree, magna cum laude with honors in psychology from Brown University, where he was elected to Phi Beta Kappa. He received his Ph.D. in clinical psychology from the State University of New York at Stony Brook. He received his law degree from the Boston University School of Law and practiced law in Boston prior to relocating his practice to Michigan.
Mr. Landau practiced with the firm of Dykema Gossett PLLC for 18 years where he was an equity member. He left Dykema Gossett to form his own firm in 2007 and has specialized in mortgage fraud litigation. RJ Landau Partners has represented a variety of mortgage lenders, including Bank of America, JP Morgan Chase, IndyMac Bank, ABN AMRO Mortgage Group, EMC Mortgage Corporation, Countrywide Home Loans and the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation. He is admitted to practice in Michigan, Ohio, Minnesota and Massachusetts, the First, Sixth and Federal Circuits, as well as the United States Supreme Court. Mr. Landau is a member of the bar of the U.S. District Courts for the Eastern and Western Districts of Michigan, the District of Massachusetts and the Northern District of Illinois. He has also served as lead outside counsel in matters pending in the District of Minnesota, the Northern and Southern Districts of New York, the District of New Jersey and the Northern District of Ohio. Mr. Landau has been recognized in the list of Michigan “Super Lawyers” by Law & Politics Media, Inc. for his work in business litigation each year from 2006 through 2015. He also holds the “AV Preeminent” rating from Martindale-Hubbell representing the highest possible rating in both legal ability and ethical standards.
