Eversheds Sutherland (US) LLP
Bob Owen is Partner in Charge of the New York Office of Sutherland, Asbill & Brennan LLP. He has decades of commercial litigation experience acquired in hundreds of cases before federal and state courts and arbitration panels in New York and throughout the United States. Bob’s accomplishments as a trial lawyer have been recognized by the National Institute of Trial Advocacy which has invited him to teach trial skills at its flagship national program in Boulder, Colorado (seven times) and at many of its regional programs.
Bob was an engineering student at Northwestern University in college and as such learned Fortran, and basic computer logic. He ran a remote terminal of the university’s mainframe computer as a summer job in 1969. As a lawyer, he was the primary litigator for Wang Laboratories, Inc. in the New York area in more than 50 matters in the 1980s and 1990s. Many of those disputes concerned hardware sales and software licensing agreements.
Although primarily a litigator and trial lawyer, Bob is also a nationally recognized expert in eDiscovery, which equips him to manage the costs and risks that eDiscovery has added into the litigation calculus in recent years. Chambers consistently rates him as one of five first rank Leading Individuals in eDiscovery nationally, and reports that he is “a highly-regarded e-discovery specialist, who wins market approval as ‘a stellar guy with a great reputation.’” In addition, he is a member of the Advisory Board of the Georgetown Law Advanced Institute for eDiscovery, and President of the non-profit Electronic Discovery Institute.
In the course of his career, Bob has become known for efficient, creative and early dispute resolution and in 2011 was awarded the BTI Client Service All-Star Award.
