In 2013 Rick Barrera, a successful trial attorney, joined forces with Kent Buckingham to form the Buckingham Barrera Vega Law Firm. Since then, he has served his clients in litigation proceedings in multiple areas of personal injury – including wrongful death, tractor-trailer crashes, oil field work-related injuries, and medical malpractice. Going to trial can be difficult for victims and their families, that’s why Rick is dedicated and passionate when assisting them navigate court proceedings from beginning to end. His commitment to his clients and his profession shows through the numerous settlements and lawsuits his firm has successfully finalized.
Rick believes strongly in civic duty and has served in various leadership capacities with Rotary International, Midland Hispanic Chamber of Commerce and Hispanic National Bar Association. He currently serves on the Minority Caucus for American Association for Justice, where he is Immediate Past Chair. Rick is also an active member in the New Mexico Trial Lawyers Association as well as the Texas Trial Lawyers Association. Rick has been named a “Super Lawyers’ Rising Star” in 2018 and 2019 and a "Super Lawyer" in 2021.
Rick was born and raised in the border community of Del Rio, TX. He graduated from the University of Texas at Austin with a Bachelor of Arts in Economics. After successful careers in grocery retail management and financial advising, Rick fulfilled his childhood dream of attending law school. He graduated from Texas Southern University’s Thurgood Marshall School of Law and is licensed to practice law in Texas and New Mexico.
2019 - F. Scott Baldwin Award: Rick Barrera was honored by the American Association for Justice as the 2019 recipient of the F. Scott Baldwin Award. First established in 1997 to honor and recognize F. Scott Baldwin, a world-renowned trial lawyer whose work throughout his career helped secure outstanding damage outcomes for injured victims and their families. It is presented each year to recognize Baldwin’s excellence and compassion he brought to the legal profession and the significant time he invested in training, preparing and encouraging lawyers to the profession of trial law.
2014 - American Association for Justice Leadership Academy
