In his 30-plus years of practice, John Schouest has established himself as straightforward, respectful and honest. With a reputation for creative case management, he is able to fashion his approach and defense to match his client’s goals or a judge’s unique perspective.
Much of Mr. Schouest’s practice is focused in maritime law, which he discovered while attending law school at Louisiana State University and quickly found to be a perfect fit. Because a large amount of energy exploration, production and transportation takes place in or on the water, he understands how to help address and defend claims — many of which involve personal injury and property loss. Many of the world’s largest insurance companies consider him their preferred legal counsel for his ability to effectively handle high-dollar, multi-jurisdictional and legally-complex claims.
Mr. Schouest is considered one of the world’s leading attorneys for Defense Base Act work, defending claims against contractors providing support to the military and other vital services around the globe. This area incorporates the Longshore and Harbor Workers’ Compensation Act as the basis of its application, and Mr. Schouest has found it to be a natural extension of his practice.
He is well-versed in every type of DBA situation imaginable. His previous experience and expertise in this area have helped shape many of the laws governing DBA claims. He has helped SBSB Law build a deep bench of attorneys proficient in DBA work. These include several former Administrative Law Judges briefing attorneys and a former Office of Workers’ Compensation Programs District Director, which makes SBSB Law the premier firm in this and other related practice areas.
Mr. Schouest is licensed to practice in Texas and Louisiana.
