James W. Dawson, Jr. counsels businesses, organizations and individuals on a variety of federal, state and local tax matters. He also counsels clients on a variety of estate planning and administration issues.Before joining Miles & Stockbridge P.C. as counsel, he was an associate with Stein, Sperling, Bennett, De Jong, Driscoll & Greenfeig, P.C. in Rockville, Maryland. In 1994, he joined the Comptroller of Maryland's office and was appointed and served as the assistant director, legal, for the Comptroller of Maryland until returning to private practice at the end of 2005. As an assistant director, legal, he oversaw the operational aspects of the Revenue Administrative Division in its interpretation and application of the state’s income, estate, sales and use, and admissions and amusement tax laws, rules and regulations. He began his professional career in the tax department of Ernst & Young where he focused on business taxes, ERISA, and tax-exempt organizations.
