Edward M. Richters, a Shareholder in Jackson Lewis’ Hartford office, received his law degree from Catholic University of America School of Law in 1981 after obtaining a Bachelor of Arts degree in 1978 from the University of Connecticut. He also has completed the Human Resources Executive Program at the University of Michigan.
For over 30 years, Mr. Richters has focused his legal practice on employer defense and counseling, including jury and bench trials in state and federal court, labor arbitrations, proceedings before the Department of Labor, Connecticut Commission on Human Rights and Opportunities, and Workers’ Compensation Commission, as well as appellate work before the U.S. Courts of Appeal for the Second and Sixth Circuits.
In addition to his extensive background as a trial lawyer and legal counselor, Mr. Richters has significant experience as a senior executive of a major corporation. He served as Vice President - Human Resources and Ethics Officer for the Northeast Utilities System - one of the 20 largest electric utilities in the United States and the largest in New England - where he was responsible for all aspects of human resources design and administration for a diverse workforce of 9300 professional and physical employees in Connecticut, Massachusetts and New Hampshire including: policy development and implementation, staffing, employee benefits, compensation, general employee relations, EEO/diversity, quality of work-life programs, occupational safety and health, learning and development programs, disability management and labor relations for 2400 union employees covered by 11 contracts. He was also responsible for a comprehensive, system-wide ethics and corporate compliance program.
Mr. Richters also served as Senior Counsel in the Northeast Utilities Legal Department, where he was responsible for all labor and employment legal matters for the Northeast Utilities System including: counsel to the CEO and others in senior management concerning human resources issues, in addition to service as Company trial counsel in state and federal employment litigation and labor arbitrations.
Mr. Richters is a former U.S. Marine, whose community involvement has included service as a member of the Board of Directors of the Governor’s Coalition for Youth with Disabilities, as well as past service as board member and co-president of Hartford Interval House, a regional battered women’s shelter and domestic violence services agency.
