He also has obtained reversals of convictions in appellate courts and has been retained specifically to represent clients in contested sentencing proceedings. Matt’s defense work also has proved valuable in advising and taking action on behalf of corporate and individual victims of financial crimes, such as embezzlement scenarios.
Clients frequently retain Matt to conduct internal investigations in an array of sensitive and challenging circumstances. He has handled domestic and international investigations of matters involving the Foreign Corrupt Practices Act, False Claims Act and qui tam matters, import and export practices, political corruption, financial wrongdoing, workplace misconduct, whistleblower, and other sensitive circumstances.
Beyond his practice, he is an engaging public speaker who, in addition to presenting at numerous CLEs on best practices in investigations and related corporate governance issues, serves as an Adjunct Professor of Law at the University of St. Thomas School of Law on Investigations. He also devotes considerable time to work on human-rights advocacy in addition to his work on pro bono matters, including serving as a member of the District of Minnesota Criminal Justice Act Panel.
In his spare time, Matt is an avid soccer fan who, along with his four sons, can be found cheering on Minnesota United at the TCF Stadium or, with only one of his sons, unconditionally supporting Liverpool Football Club from afar.
