Chris is the firm's Managing Partner and is actively involved in the firm's Business and Corporate Law, Securities, Agribusiness, Renewable Energy and Real Estate practice groups. Chris has been recognized by Chambers USA® as a leading practitioner in Iowa in corporate/mergers and acquisitions, selected for inclusion in Best Lawyers® in the areas of business organizations (including LLCs and Partnerships), corporate law and mergers and acquisitions law and listed in Super Lawyers for business organization, corporate law and mergers and acquisitions law. Chris represents numerous and diverse clients in corporate/mergers and acquisitions, business and transactional matters, and financing and capital formation, and assists with many other legal concerns.
Because most of his clients view him as "general counsel", Chris frequently works with other attorneys at BrownWinick to provide a full range of legal services. Chris prides himself on his ability to "partner" with clients and add value by taking a practical, results-oriented approach and viewing each engagement from a businessperson's perspective. He believes one of the keys to providing the best legal representation is knowing a client's specific business, industry and strategic plan. His focus is on client service, creativity and results.
Chris's practice focuses primarily on domestic and international business, transactional, corporate and securities matters, including: organization/formation/startup and management issues; debt and equity financing including public and private securities offerings; mergers and acquisitions; joint ventures; real estate transactions; manufacturing and supply chain transactions; andfranchise/dealer/distributor issues. Industries served include manufacturing, technology, biotech, agribusiness, venture capital, private equity/investment banking and energy, among others.
Chris is a recognized leader within BrownWinick, currently serving as Managing Partner after several years on the firm's Management Committee. Chris also actively participates in BrownWinick's associate and mentoring programs. He currently serves on the Board of Directors of the Association of Business and Industry, the Workforce Board for the Greater Des Moines Partnership, the Operation Downtown Board of Directors for the Downtown Community Alliance, the Greater Des Moines Partnership's International Trade Council and the Board for Iowa Corn Opportunities. Chris is also a strategic advisor to the Iowa Economic Development Authority on appropriate structure and operation of angel investor tax credit programs, serves as an expert panelist for VentureNet Iowa and was appointed to the Iowa Department of Revenue Innovation Fund Tax Credit Advisory Panel.
Chris received his B.A., magna cum laude, from Central College in 1989 and his J.D., with distinction, from the University of Iowa in 1993. He was admitted to the bar in Wisconsin in 1993, in Iowa in 1994 and is a member of the Polk County, Iowa State (Member, Agricultural Law; Business Law; Intellectual Property Law; International Lasw; Real Estate and Title Law and Trade Regulation/Antitrust Sections) and American (Member, Business Law and International Law Sections and Forum on Franchising) Bar Associations.
