Adam Augustine Carter is a seasoned courtroom attorney known for his effective advocacy and his negotiating skills.

He focuses his practice on employment agreements and other contractual matters; on whistleblower actions under the False Claims, Dodd-Frank, and Sarbanes-Oxley (SOX) Acts; and on the representation of people who face workplace injustice including discrimination and retaliation.

Mr. Carter is an in-demand negotiator for professionals who are switching jobs, but he's also a trial lawyer who has won important victories for employees who were shunted aside because of factors such as sex, age, and military status.

"I help clients to navigate tough transitions," he says. "When people come to me, they need legal advice, of course — but they also have a human need for reassurance, for someone who understands what they deserve and who will fight beside them. If I play that role properly, my clients can enter their next phase with pride and confidence."

Based in Washington, D.C., Mr. Carter has handled cases in a wide range of courts — both federal and local — and in many other arbitral venues. Among his notable litigation outcomes for clients:

  • An $830,000 jury award for a former Marine Corps pilot of Mexican ancestry who was terminated from his sales job at defense giant Lockheed Martin Corp.
  • An $819,000 jury verdict for a university scientist who suffered retaliation after blowing the whistle on misuse of federal research grants.
  • An appeals court decision that held that employer statements about "energetic, future people" may be evidence of age bias
  • An appellate ruling that SOX whistleblowers have an absolute right to seek relief in federal court if the U.S. Department of Labor takes too long to act on their complaints

Mr. Carter is a graduate of Georgetown University and of Georgetown University Law Center, where he served as editor-in-chief of the American Criminal Law Review. He is an active participant in the Archdiocesan Pro Bono Legal Network in Washington.
